I highly encourage anyone who loves dogs to completely discount anything Cesar Millan says. Here's a link to a review of this book from the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior:
Cesar does NOT know what he is talking about, and often times on his show, his "training techniques" can be down right abusive. The AVSAB, and all other animal behavior associations, are completely against Cesar Millan and his methods. It's disgusting to me that he has obtained so much fame.
I'd suggest authors that are members of the AVSAB such as Patricia McConnell, Ian Dunbar, Sophia Yin, and Karen Pryor.
This book would be a lot more helpful if it was less about how great Cesar is. It would pare the book down by half, or more, and leave the good bits - dog behavior and how to interact appropriately to get desired response.
This is a great book! I have had dogs all my life. Now I understand why they do what they do!
We just got a rescue dog and while she is just a good dog she does have some "baggage" Cesar's book is helping us work with her to become the great and happy dog we know she can be. I like the way there is an index in the back so after you've read the entire book you can refer to specific items with ease.
I bought this book for my husband, who had already read it. He loved the book and found many ideas to implement while training the new puppy. We would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to have their dog compliant.
I read this book twice to make sure I understood what Cesar was saying and I'm glad I did because I missed a few important points the first reading. I am amazed at how well and quickly my dogs have responded to "Cesar's Way". All three are rescue dogs with issues until they had a "pack leader" who was consistent. We are all much happier, calmer and have a lot of fun. It takes work, but it's well worth it! Thank you Cesar!!
