Funny adventure with teenage criminal genius
Colfer knows how to make a criminally-minded 14-year-old genius more than sympathetic -- the reader cheers for him. Through all four novels, especially this latest installment, Artemis shows a softer side to his crime-at-all costs personality; slowly, he's growing into a 'real boy.' The growth is slow enough over the four books that his change of heart is believable. Artemis struggles with deciding between right and wrong, reaching out or isolating himself, the importance of family versus the pull of baser instincts. Should he use his gigantic brain for the betterment of mankind, to save the faeries, to find his father, or just to amass an amazing amount of wealth? These are questions I think everyone struggles with at some time in their life ... good thing Artemis tackles them for us.
