Marilyn Nelson is quickly becoming one of my favorite poets. Fortune's Bones tells the story of a slave owned by a doctor. Upon the man's death, the doctor saves his skeleton as a teaching tool. The poems are emotional and powerful. Appropriate for sharing with 8th graders or higher.

Enslaved Bones Tell Unknown Story
Again, Marilyn Nelson has achieved the art of telling a life thorugh poems. In a musical style, she uncovers the little known story of an enslaved Black man and the deragatory treatment of his living body and of his bones in death. This children's book is both informative and packed withmany emotions. The images in the book placed next to the poems link both history and figurative language. "Fortune's Bones", although poetry, is fantastic enough to match narratives of enslaved people of Afrikan descent.
