About this title: Legal thriller writer Scott Turow brings back a recurring character but switches genres for this complex and haunting wartime tale. Stewart Dubinsky's father was a reticent man who never discussed his service in World War II. Cleaning out his recently deceased father's belongings, Stewart discovers a bundle of letters written by his father to his then-fiancée, a woman not Stewart's mother. With the help of the letters, army records, and a secret memoir, Stewart reconstructs a hitherto unknown and extremely troubling part of his father's life, when David Dubin was a JAG lawyer pursuing a ...

"This book was terrific, set mostly in World War II. One running theme is that life is neither black or white (although we crave clear cut answers). Life is mostly very gray and that was very apparent during the millions of incidents that occurred during World War II. The other running theme in this book is that we become the stories that we create about ourselves. I just love that! It seems so empowering to me. We CAN write our own life story. In the book, the main character is seeking the truth about his parents who met during the War. His discoveries make him see things in a whole new way. I listened to the audio version of this book. If you have that opportunity, make sure to listen to the interview with Scott Turow at the end. Then listen some more because Scott goes on to talk about the power of audio books. Very good!"
"Good Read. Deals with one sons discovery of his Fathers past. His exploits and bravery of common men in shaping historic events of WWII.The naration style is great especially the use of letters to continue the story and to create suspense."
"This book is two stories interleaved. The first, but probably secondary story as far as getting the reader absorbed, is the story a journalist takes in unravelling his father and mother's lives in WWII. When Stewart Dubinsky discovers love letters written by his father to someone other than his mother during the War, he also find out about his father's court marshal and imprisonment. He then starts to question the story he and his sister have always known of how his parents met - his father the soldier come to liberate and his mother the Jewish concentration camp survivor.
As Stewart investigates his parents' past, so the story of his father's time in the army is told. And this is the story which will have you glued to the pages. It was pretty gripping until page 86. And then the final line on that page sat me down and kept me down for a whole day until I was finished the book.
I was dying to know what happened. As I worked bits and pieces out, it simply made it more exciting and increased the hold both stories had on me. Each time the voice changed from the father's story to the son's story, I missed the previous protagonist. But then found myself so absorbed by the new voice I wanted that story to continue uninterrupted.
The stories and the unveiling of hidden information makes the reader wonder about what secrets their family has. And why.
This book also very eruditely covers the damage that war does to individuals, families and communities. The futility of war and the very sadness of the fact that young people are fighting wars they did not declare are the emotions I came away with after reading this book.
Are we never going to learn?
A good holiday read but you won't be devastated to return it to a library once read. But still worth reading."
"Has some questionable material/language. But I got into the story. Read x2. Historical novel. The narrator is the son of the protagonist. Surprising twist at end."
