Worth the effort

A reader should remember the period in which Montesquieu wrote, mid-18th century France, its accepted style and the necessary rigors for permission and acceptance to be published by the French Academy. Once accustomed to that, then consider that it is a short time BEFORE the revolutions of 1776, and 1789, a time of considerable political unrest. and Montesqueiu had to be careful about what he said, and how he said it. As the reverberations with Locke and Paine become clear, it is easier to see how wide-spread a movement the Enlightenment was - and how much we need it, again, now.
