Want to be an Ultimate Hitchhiker!

This is a fantastic tongue-in-cheek indictment of human society, politics, and cultural customs seen from the perspective of one Arthur Dent, a hapless traveler through the universe. It does for the Modern World what Erasmus' Praise of Folly did for the Renaissance World. Love it and will read it again in the future.

The more I think about this book, the more I laugh. Occasionally almost deep, this collection is worth the cash. It catches the reader off guard in delightful (and hilarious) ways.

This is in my top five favorite books. i enjoyed reading it so much that i continued to read the series three times in one year. Its strange form of humor is refreshing. I don't travel with out it.

Ridiculous and amusing

by Ellyb on Mar 19, 2008

I'm not sure that most people read the Hitchhiker series as I did, as one long volume. I alternately loved it and was saddened by it, for throughout the series of books, Arthur Dent finds and loses love, finds and loses his home, and is generally put through the wringer. At its core, however, Douglas Adams's series is a gleeful romp through alien bureaucracy and it brazenly invents its own laws of physics. It is very often hilarious, and maintains a blithe matter-of-fact narration throughout. I think it transcends the genre of "sci fi" and would appeal to just about anybody who enjoys a brush with the absurd from time to time. The Hitchhiker's Series is just about the most orderly, most polite kind of chaos you can get.
