Jim Kunstler is a prophet. He published this book back in 2005 when oil production was still on the rise, as was the stock market, housing prices, and all the rest. Yet Mr. Kunstler saw that the powers-that-be in America, along with the citizenry, for the most part, in their wake were sleepwalking into the future. By refusing to recognize the trends that Mr. Kunstler identifies, those very powers were driving, and continue to drive, our economy and indeed our whole way of life off a cliff instead of installing immediate, radical, evasive action aimed at mitigating the problems associated with population overshoot and fossil fuel depletion. Combining penetrating analysis, a sharp wit, and a hearty sense of humor, Mr. Kunstler hits a home run with this seminal work. It changed my life as it opened my eyes to the catastrophic nature of the problems not only our country faces but our fragile planet. Please read this book and pass it on when you're done. Amen.
