Whiskey Doesn't Always Age Well

by SeldomSeen on Apr 23, 2008

This is a sad review for me to write. The early novels of James Crumley are my some of my favorite novels of all time. I keep waiting for him to write another, but with each disappointing new release, it is evident that the old magic is gone forever. The right madness features C.W. Shrugue in another hard-boiled caper full of depravity, drugs and, of course, lots of booze. But what was a fascinating, dark portrait of a troubled young man living on the margins of western white trash society, is now a perverted tale of a paranoid, egotistical, old alcoholic. Skip this one. Reread The Last Good Kiss, The Wrong Case or The Dancing Bear instead?
