The scholarship is outdated, but more worrying than that is the author's lack of academic objectivity, a surprising failing in a man of his reputation, including an all to obvious prejudice against Islam and the Ottomans: the four-and-a-half centuries of Ottoman rule in the Balkans was not some kind of dark age, as he suggests, but one that has left a magnificent legacy of architecture and culture, and was also a great deal more tolerant towards other faiths than Runciman appears to have been towards Islam. He also uncritically repeats the assertion that the mediaeval Bosnian Church was Bogomil (dualist) in nature, though even at the time he was writing this notion, based largely on Papal claims that the Bosnians were heretics, had been challenged (it has now been convincingly disproved by later objective scholarship). Not his best work by a long way.
