Pattern language and construction detailing

by CDWCDWCDW on Oct 23, 2008

I like the clear, conceptual way he explains detailing. It explains the underlying forces that have to be delt with in various situations and why certain materials and detail configurations are desirable. Constructability, cleanability, maintainability and even aesthetics. The book teaches design and construction detailing in a holistic way. It doesn't matter that this is an older edition because the principles and the attitude toward detailing remain true. This book reminds me of some of the ways that we taught architectural detailing at the ETH many years ago. Even more strongly it reminds me of the clear conceptual framework used by Christopher Alexander in "A Pattern Language."
