This is the magical Regency England of Patricia Wrede ("Mairelon the Magician"), brought to life through the letters she and co-author Caroline Stevermer actually exchanged as they built a story of two cousins, one in the country, and one in London. Young readers who are not yet ready for Jane Austen's more difficult prose will likely find this book (and its two sequels) a far more accessible gate to that world. The letter-exchange format is clever--not to mention historically appropriate--and allows the reader to become part of the action. And there is plenty of action, not to mention romance, all tempered by humor and grounded with realistic characters. Kate and Cecy are good foils for each other, each helping the other to unravel the thickening plot as they enlarge one another's puzzling picture.

This story started slowly, introducing the characters and setting. Then unexplainable (for the moment!) occurences begin to happen. Witty and fresh, this story is magical and fun to read. I am eagerly perusing the next volume already, I enjoyed this first one so much!
