I read the books of Rabi Teluskin as much for the information on Jewish life than the mystery, but the mystery is the delivery vehicle so it has to be considered. I found this book an interesting twist--we start with a leading character who is a close friend of the protagonist, seemingly the ideal of his class. Over the course of the story, it appears that people who should have known him best didn't know him at all and his character is completely destroyed. It turns out he is the antithesis of what he first appears. The plot is complicated--as a rabbinic scholar would enjoy constructing, but there are several loose ends that are never tied up at the end. One could say that is simply a reflection of life--not all loose ends get tied up there either, but in a mystery story you expect them to be so. The story is a fascinating exploration of police investigation, psychological theory and Jewish law and philosophy. Having a victim/perpetrator who is a psychiatrist and close friend of the rabbi, and a co-protagonist who is the rabbi's wife and is a police psychologist, makes for a rich environment. It also gets (slightly) into the distinction between psychiatry and psychology, a distinction not clearly understood by most of the public.
