Very Good+ paperback. Normal shelfwear to the exterior including scattered light scratching as well as rubbing/curving to the fore-edge corners. Slight yellowing/smudging to the page-ends. Otherwise, pages and text are clean and bright. Overall, an attractive copy. 434 pp.
I read this book in college, many years ago. It's a measure of Hofstadter's abilities as an historian that it continues to be relevant--in fact, even more so now than when I read it 30 years ago. The frightful coalition between Evangelicals and Know Nothings is, once again, ascendant, and this go round, poised to use the mass media to inflict havoc on the political system. I'm glad Hofstadter didn't live to see this particularly vile incarnation of what he describes as a core theme in American history. He would be appalled.
