Mea Culpa

by piafinn on Mar 13, 2008

By examining how various prime ministers since the second world war viewed the military and either supported or denigrated it, Granatstein also points the finger at an electorate that has naively come to believe that we are the world's peacekeepers, that everyone loves Canadians, and that we have no need to increase our military spending since no one would ever attack us. It's bad enough living through each change as it happens, but when they're all collected into one book, it is beyond sad what we have done to our military. No support, no respect. Not even replacing equipment before it reaches 'rust-out', i.e. our 40 year old Sea King helicopters which are falling out of the sky, have been promised to be replaced over and over, and they're still waiting for them! Our military funding has not been significantly increased (until our current conservative government), our anti-terrorism and border security are not much improved, and Canadians confuse anti-Americanism with patriotism. A Canadian is more than just "not an American." We need to be able to assert our sovereignty and protect our half of North America, so the Americans don't need to. If the current political climate of anti-Americanism continues, they may not be inclined to, either.
