Fine in Very Good jacket. Book. 8vo-over 7¾-9¾" tall. This book details the history of the Civil War in Louisiana, the so-called Gulf Theater of the war. Mansfield was the last major Confederate victory of the war, where a ragtag collection of over and underage recruits and dismounted cavalry stunned a Union force that outnumbered them more than 3 to 1. Book Condition: Fine; two small spots on text block, otherwise unmarked. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good; price sticker remnant at bottom right read, one small crease at bottom inside front; light rubbing to rear left.
Mr Ayres uses a special talent of taking the reader through the events of a mostly forgotten and often ignored Red River Campaign. Beginning before the war, he takes the reader through a series of battles and skirmishes which were the most severe fought west of the Mississippi. The book gives concise biographies of familiar CW names as well as several lesser participants whose effect on the outcome was just as important. Politics, personal gain, bad/good military strategy, glory, bravado, luck, greed, and the lives which are affected by war have been brought together in Mr Ayres history of this "minor" backwater conflict.
