Delve in and you won't come back out
I appreciate DrewGirl's thoughtful analysis, but feel the opposite in many ways! I actually slightly prefer this book to "Trickster's Choice," because this is where the intrigue gains exponentially in intensity. There are so many things going on at all times, it captivated my attention fully whenever I read it and I'd look up to find that an hour and a half had passed in what felt like twenty minutes. Aly also comes into her own as a talented spy, and as a woman. Whereas in the previous book the characters were all sort of green and fumbling, here they each seem to crystallize in skill and determination. This transformation was accomplished deftly, remaining true to the heart of the characters. I also loved the addition of the darkings, who are just inescapably, ridiculously cute. I can't help myself when they're around. This pair of books just may be Pierce's most densely woven, and it's a pleasure to see how well she executes such a complicated plot involving prophecies, gods, racism, oppression, colonialism, rebellion, and conspiracy.

Not Ms. Pierce's best, but still a good read
Although I was excited to begin this book having recently re-read Trickster's Choice and been reminded by it of why I absolutely love Tamora Pierce's books, I have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed by this book. Although the plot remains interesting (Alianne, daughter of George Cooper and Alanna the Lioness, continues her work as spymaster in the growing raka rebellion to reclaim the Copper Isles for their people) and the characters remain likeable and believable, I found that the action grew pretty slow during several parts of the novel. As Aly herself admits, she doesn't do much more than sit around and process information regarding the widespread conspiracy. This makes for a somewhat slow read and made it hard for me to really get into the story. There is much about the book to redeem it, though, including a lot of cute, witty characters (I especially loved the darkings and Taybur); several interesting - and highly devious - plots devised by Aly; resolution of the growing tension that started developing between Aly and Nawat at the end of Trickster's Choice and more observations about racial differences that teach some very important lessons that we all need to remember. So, although I wasn't quite as happy with the book as I thought I would be, I would still recommend it to anyone who loves Tortall!
