Consistently inventive and entertaining

As usual, Terry Pratchett has concocted a well-balanced story of amazing challenges counterpointed by characters that spring to life in a world somewhat different from, but eerily similar to our own. This trilogy of youth-oriented (but adult-enjoyable) novels takes place here on planet Earth, rather than his fantasy-universe Discworld, but the subjects are 6-inch tall gnomes who, unbeknownst to humans, live under the floors of a department store. The crisis of the first book begins when it becomes clear the humans are going to destroy the building the gnomes have lived in for years. Gnomes from outside the store find there way in and are faced with helping their indoor cousins cope with the idea that there could be life outside the store. They bring with them an inherited cipher of an artifact that has been passed from father to son for generations of gnomes. It is supposed to have amazing powers, but no-one has ever seen it do anything. The response of the artifact to being indoors is the first of many surprises for the gnomes and the reader in an unpredictable sleigh ride through a long series of predicaments. The gnomes find it difficult to find a real home of their own, and learn more about themselves, their past, and their destiny than they could've imagined before the humans decided to knock down the store. If you have a taste for satisfying but complicated plots of discovery in the face of daunting challenges, or for rich, interesting characters, this trilogy in one volume has a lot to offer.
