Time Honored Classic About a Boy and His Dog

by pavloveia on Jul 24, 2008

I read Bristle Face as a 10-year-old 48 years ago! It made an impact on me that was so strong that I recently tried to find a copy of it so I could read it again and I was fortunate to find one. It was interesting to reread this book nearly five decades later and find that it was still worthwhile reading for me. Some of it I had forgotten, but not the main theme that runs throughout the book--loyalty and unconditional love. Zachary Ball wrote a book that can be enjoyed by all the generations because it's a classic story of love, loyalty and respect to which all ages can relate. Bristle Face is a dog that any dog lover would have had contact with. He was as real to me this time around as he was so many years ago when I was a child. The humans that inhabit the world of Bristle Face are a myriad of characters that enrich this story. This is not a complicated book by any means and it certainly isn't the great American novel, but Ball has given his reader a colorful landscape and true, rich characters that are touched in various ways by this wonderful canine, Bristle Face. It's a quick read and well worth your time.

A Heart-warming Read!

Not just for young readers, this book ranks among the classics Old Yeller and Where the Red Fern Grows. Bristle Face is Zachary Ball's touching story of a boy and his new-found dog as they search for a real home. A friend gave me this book when I was in sixth grade, and 22 years later I still periodically dust it off and enjoy the tale again. Highly recommended.
