Originally, I found this book in our local library. After looking it over, I immediately bought a copy. This book is a 'must have' on any writer's bookshelf. Even my non-writing friends have found it interesting.
This is a Diagnostic & Statistical Manual for the non-psychologist. I actually have a degree in abnormal psych myself, and found this a very helpful abridged manual for looking up psychological issues which were not my area of expertise (such as divorce, birth order, etc.)
My only problem with this book was Chapter Six, "Sexual Issues". As someone whose career was spent dealing with sex offenders in the forensics unit of a state psychiatric hospital, I found some of her information to be a bit dated, and slightly limited. However, as the field of psychology is extremely vast - nobody can be an expert on every aspect - I realize Dr. Edelstein's career has focused on loss, women's issues and creativity, so sexual deviance probably isn't her area of expertise. Writers trying to build a sexually deviant character might need more information than this book supplies.
Overall, I felt this was a wonderful basic resource for those writers striving to construct believable characters, and would highly recommend this book to any writer who wants their characters to be the best they can be.
Linda Edelstein's book, Writer's Guide to Character Traits, serves as a digest of the DSM-IV for writers who want to describe - more precisely - the "character traits"(both normal and abnormal) of their fictional, or non-fictional characters.
Linda Edelstein's book Writer's Guide to Character Traits is an exceptional book for developing characters. Her guidelines inspired me to dig deeper into forming believeable and three dimensional characters. It was exciting to mix different personality traits to form new types of people. I recommend this book for beginners and veterens alike.
