Smart, Searing Writing
In the tradition of Waugh and the Amises, Mr. St. Aubyn writes beautiful, bracing prose that exposes the decadence and dissipation of a slice of upper class British society. The trilogy follows young Patrick Melrose, beginning with a childhood of both extraordinary privilege and monstrous abuse through a harrowing drug binge that leaves him teetering on the edge of insanity and death. It culminates in a witty, farcical country house party after which the older and slightly wiser Patrick seems ready to find his own path.
Mordant, incisive writing. Highly recommended.
