While four individuals are named in the title, the book provides information on several others who had an effect on American history. The 1912 election is what the front two thirds of the book builds up to. A lot of information on other, earlier events, is used to work up to the election. A small section covers the election itself and the last two chapters are on the aftermath. Many programs on the progressive platform were adopted by the major parties. Though only a few Progressive Party candidates were elected, many of their ideas were later enacted into law.
