John M

A classic book on a native American people.

by John M on May 29, 2014

The original edition was written in the 1940's and re-edited or updated in 1974. It is a sympathetic view of the life styles of the Navaho (Navajo) nation principally located in northern New Mexico and Arizona. The Navaho language is covered in a chapter entitled "The tongue of the people" which largely condenses the classic work of Robert Young and William Morgan.. It is described as a highly precise language well fitted to the needs of the people (the 'Dene') and is different in many astonishing ways from English and other European languages. The remainder largely describes the history, problems and conflicts with dominant English speaking culture, in a highly readable account.
