This is a unique look at a pivotal part of World War 2 history. Keegan shows how each of the armies relfected its' own nation's values and traditions. He documents the French Resistance, the British, the Canadians, the Americans, the Poles and the Germans. He doesn't just dismiss the Germans as enemies, but recognizes the tactical achievements made by them, and the contribution they brought to future strategic plans. He noted the idiosyncrasies of each country's culture on their style of fighting. For example, the German's discipline, which included such a regimented schedule that nothing would keep them from sleep when it was time to sleep, even though American paratroopers were raining from the sky. Now Germany and Japan have discovered a profound anti-militarism since then. They have enacted laws so that they'll only fight in self defence. The Canadians, in both World Wars, were known as the shock troops of the British empire. The American troops had their inauguration at Normandy, and have been fighting to maintain world peace, ever since. The Poles, with their determination, eventually got their country back. It was a well-researched, in-depth book.
