This is considered the reference book to end all reference books (according to English majors and rabbid readers of the classics). A complete list of works that would round out any human?s life. Books on philosophy, science, arts, fiction, plays. All the moldy oldies, basically. I don?t agree with all the selections that made it into this book, but most are great choices and include a long description of the book and some background history about the author. John S. Major is a welcome addition-Fadiman loves classical Greek and the American Ash-can authors, but failed to include many works from Asia and the Middle East. Luckily, Major fills in the gaps.
