Washington, Hong Kong and Peking - terror sweeps the globe. The Vice- Premier of the People's Republic has been brutally murdered by a legendary assassin, and everyone is asking the same fearful questions: why has Bourne come back? Who is paying him? Who is next on his death list? But US officials know the shocking truth: there is no Jason Bourne. There never was. But someone has resurrected the name, and if he is not stopped, the world will pay a devastating price. Jason Bourne must live again. He must utilise his murderous skills. But this time the will to survive is not enough. This time Bourne must reign supreme...
Poor David Webb.... once again his country has a need for Jason Bourne to come out of the woodwork and handle the dirty work as only he can. There is another Bourne picking up in Asia where he left off years ago, and this new Bourne is part of a plot that the West can't see come to fruition; their only solution is to enlist the real Jason Bourne to help uncover the plot and take out the threat. How do you recruit a man you mishandled so badly before..... you trick him into it.
Where as the middle movie of this name lacked the action punch of the first, this book won't leave you disappointed. We learn more of Bourne's past but the true plotline is stopping the coup plot, which makes it a quality read.
Publishers Weekly, 1986-01-31 Ludlum has never come up with a more head-spinning, spine-jolting, intricately mystifying, Armageddonish, in short Ludlumesque, thriller than this. A Peking leader of seemingly irreproachable reputation, secretly a Kuomintang fanatic, has masterminded a plot to take over Hong Kong via political assassination, the result of which would be civil war in China and possibly global disaster. His principal agent is an assassin-for-hire masquerading as the legendary ``Jason Bourne,'' a one-time secret U.S. agent now, under his real name David Webb, struggling with the aid of a psychiatrist and his loving wife Marie to recover from amnesia. Only one man can destroy the conspiracy: Webb, who must be persuaded to re-assume his Bourne identity, track down the impostor and through him lay a trap for the vile Shengthe ``persuasion'' to be by way of his abducted wife. The action jolts from the back alleys of Hong Kong and Kowloon to a secret government complex in the Colorado mountains to the seats of power in Peking and even the interior of Mao's tomb. Every chapter ends with a cliff-hanger; the story brims with assassination, torture, hand-to-hand combat, sudden surprise and intrigue within intrigue. It's a sure-fire bestseller. 650,000 first printing; $150,000 ad/promo; BOMC selection; Franklin Library limited edition. (March 15) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved
