Inimitable voice

by KateRobart on Nov 12, 2009

Penelope Fitzgerald is one of those British writers whose work, despite receiving prizes like the ManBooker, hasn't registered with a wider public; even lovers of Rose Tremain or Peter Ackroyd may not have been introduced to her. This collection includes three of her best books, though if you find her voice as compelling as I do you'll want to read them all. She is short, allusive, deep and sharp, but always enormously sympathetic to the human condition. And funny.
