Tragic, but Beautiful

by sleepn on Aug 20, 2007

This is the sequel to The Book of the Dun Cow. It isn't necessary to read the other one, but I recommend it highly. In my whole life, I have only cried while reading two books. One of them is Where the Red Fern Grows. The other one is this book. So yes, this book is sad. And at one point, I simply had to put the book down to let myself cry. You know, that's a rare experience, and in a strange way, very refreshing. But it's not because of some gimmicky thing. Wangerin earns it by getting you to actually love and care for these animal characters. I have respect for writers with that kind of skill.
