Since her husband's tragic death fours years before, 29-year-old Julie Barenson had been reluctant to date, but now feels ready to test the waters. Soon, she is being wined and dined by Richard Franklin, a handsome and sophisticated engineer who treats her like a queen. She also suddenly finds herself entertaining romantic thoughts about Mike Harris, her best friend in the world. Mike is nowhere near as debonair as Richard and has permanent grease stains on his hands from his work as an auto mechanic, but he's funny, loyal, and a great favourite with Julie's beloved dog Singer. When Julie innocently chooses between the two men, she has no idea that she will set off a chain of events at once terrifying, dangerous and, ultimately, deadly. A riveting tale of love, jealousy and obsession, THE GUARDIAN has all the romance that Nicholas Sparks' fans have come to expect as well as a new element of suspense that will keep them turning the pages late into the night.

One of His Best
This book was by far one of the best Nicholas Sparks books I've read, and I've read most of them! It was a nice change from his usual love story template novels. ((You know, two people who would never be together fall in love)). This story has added suspense and keeps you "turning the page" as cliche as it sounds. It was great. The themes were more than love and trust, they were also, more specifically, about the DANGERS of love and too much trust. Excellent ending as well.

A MUST READ FOR ALL NICHOLAS SPARKS FANS. IT IS DIFFERENT FROM HIS USUAL LOVE STORIES BUT IS STILL JUST AS SUSPENSEFULL.

Different Approach By Sparks
Instead of the usual love story by Sparks, this one is a love story combined with a stalker thriller. Whereas I enjoy Sparks usual love stories I also enjoyed this. I wouldn't be surprised if this Nicholas Sparks' book becomes a movie too. Quick read, I would recommend it.

Sparks proves he can write thrillers as easily as he writes love stories. This combination love story/thriller about a stalker is well done. You get an inside look into the mind of the stalker, although your intuition sends up red flags long before you can read his thoughts. The love story that develops between Julie and Mike shows the emotional struggles involved in moving a relationship from a solid friendship to something more serious, especially when he had been her late husband's best friend. Again, likeable main characters, witty dialogue, and plenty of action. A twisted psychopath who at first seems too good to be true, and a family pet who has great intuition, as well.
Publishers Weekly, 2003-03-17 On Christmas Eve, Julie Barenson, 25 years old and newly widowed, finds an unexpected present-a Great Dane pup that her late husband, Jim, had arranged for her to receive after he died from a brain tumor. On that melodramatic note, bestselling author Sparks (Nights in Rodanthe) begins his latest love story, one in which he combines elements of romance with those of a thriller. Julie's new dog, Singer, turns out to be a better judge of character than she, which is unfortunate because the dog nearly gives away the book's ending when he growls warily at Richard Franklin, the new man in Julie's life. On the other hand, the pooch loves to be around Mike Harris, Jim's best friend, who has grown to love Julie. Richard's increasingly bizarre behavior causes Julie to break up with him, and his subsequent stalker tactics make for compelling action, especially when he plots to destroy the budding romance between Julie and Mike. But the writing is lax at best, with multiple point-of-view shifts in the course of one page or even one paragraph. Secondary characters are two-dimensional, such as Pete, the dumb cop who is taken in by the scheming Richard, and Andrea, Julie's co-worker at the local hair salon, a low-class broad from the wrong side of the tracks who might as well have "next victim" tattooed on her forehead. Yet Sparks fans clamor for his brand of love story, and, with the added punch of suspense, this one will be another bestseller. Agent, Theresa Park. (Apr.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
