Fine. Dust Jacket Included. First British edition, first printing. Publisher's red-orange cloth, spine lettered in black; in the original pictorial dust jacket, with an illustration of library shelves with volumes spelling this book's title in red and white. A fine copy, with some light wear to the extremities, a few light spots to the page edges, otherwise bright and clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear to the extremities, minor chipping to the spine ends, bright and unfaded spine, tape to the verso reinforcing the spine ends, some light soiling to the rear panel, pencil notations inside the rear flap. Overall, an attractive copy. The Body in the Library is Christie's second novel to feature her spinster amateur detective character Miss Marple, one of Christie's best loved detective figures, along with Hercule Poirot. After making her debut appearance in The Murder at the Vicarage (1930), Miss Marple returns to solve the mystery of how Colonel and Mrs. Bantry's butler wound up dead in their library. Interestingly, The Body in the Library contains nearly as many detectives as it does suspects, with Miss Marple only making an appearance halfway into the novel. This first British edition, published in May 1942, was followed the first U.S. edition, published by Dodd, Mead, and Company in February of the same year. The Body in the Library was adapted for television as part of the BBC's series Miss Marple, which starred Joan Hickson in the title role.
