The semi-biography of Abbie Burgess and her family who became the lighthouse keepers on the Matinicus Rock Lighthouse in Maine in late 1850's. Abbie's father was the one who was officially appointed the Keeper of the Lighthouse, but when her brother, 17 year old Benjy, decided to leave and go off to the sea, it was Abbie who helped her father take care of the lighthouse as well as taking care of all of the family's needs as her mother was very frail. During a very bad storm that swept away most everything on the rock except the main part of the lighthouse, Abbie had to keep the lights burning and the family taken care of for weeks alone as her father had went to the mainland for supplies. A very hard task for an adult, but able was a girl of only 15 at the time. Very informative and exciting reading. Reading is mid to advanced age level.
Fine in VG+ jacket. Hardcover first printing (indicated by the publisher's "1" on the copyright page), book is in excellent condition (looks new), dustjacket is very attractive, light wear at the spine-tips and very light rubbing on the rear panel are the only flaws, the original price (3.95) is present and a professional (removable) mylar cover is included, the color illustration on the front panel shows Abbie with a lighthouse, sea, and rocky shore in the background, "Abbie Burgess was only fourteen when she first stepped upon Matinicus Rock, off the coast of Maine, but she was no ordinary girl, as this story of her first eight years there amply testifies"
