Now 20 years old, Jim Henson's classic fantasy film The Dark Crystal - featuring the breathtaking concept design of renowned artist Brian Froud - is an incredible work of the imagination. This mystical adventure has such a cult following that when the film was recently re-released on video and DVD, it quickly sold a million copies. Just as remarkable is the cult status of The World of the Dark Crystal, Froud's book on the film. Originally published in 1982, this definitive and beautifully illustrated volume is being reissued in a collector's edition. This superb reproduction of the original volume includes an additional new essay by Froud, illustrated with previously unpublished paintings, drawings and sculptures from the film's archives. The new edition also features a facsimile of a 20-page booklet Froud and Henson created to present the film to backers - an overview of the story so rare that only a few copies are known to exist. This collector's edition of The World of the Dark Crystal, like the re-released film, is a must have for all Henson and Froud fans.

"For some time it has been common knowledge that a chance discovery of an eroded rock carving at an undisclosed site has been followed by a remarkable reproduction of texts, objects, and diagrams associated with the original find. J.J. Llewellyn, professor of archaeology at Oxford University, has devoted the last several years to translating the Aughrian manuscript. (Aughra was a wizened wise woman who chronicled the history of the world of which she was both observer and participant. ) The Book of Aughra appears in its entirety, in printed form, for the first time here in The World of The Dark Crystal." The book is very clean and free of stains or blemishes, is still exceptionally firm and tight in its binding, no pages loose, missing, folded or torn. All hinges are sound and undamaged, the page corners sharp. There is no writing, underlining, highlighting or markings of any kind in the book. The spine is uncreased and unbroken.
This lavish production is a must for any fan of the movie "The Dark Crystal". A huge book to grace any coffee table, it's crammed with full-colour illustrations and a fascinating text which could be considered a fantasy tale in its own right. It purports to be the first findings of an archaeological study of the world of the Crystal, in which human researchers strive to understand its strange artifacts and decipher the documents left by Aughra the seer. The mystical and spiritual forces inherent in the story, which are barely hinted at in the film, are discussed in much greater depth here. In fact, if you are of a mystical or occultist bent, you will find much food for thought! For the more technically minded, it is possible to trace the development of the film design through the illustrations. The story's evolution is highlighted in this collector's edition by the bonus document -- a facsimile of the original story outline (also illustrated), produced to show to potential investors. I've wanted my own copy for 20 years, and now that I have it, my only regret is not buying it sooner!
Publishers Weekly, 2003-05-01 This lavish, oversized picture book revisits the collaboration between Froud, prominent fairy artist, and Jim Hensen, Muppeteer, in the creation of their cult favorite The Dark Crystal. Reissued after 20 years, this portfolio of sketches and backdrop paintings retains a certain mystique, crammed to the margins with moss-covered runes and medieval diagrams, and peopled by the movie's menagerie of grotesque, shambling puppets. Unfortunately, the narrative fails to support the elaborate art direction, offering a dim echo of the Lord of the Rings with none of the complexity or scope. The long-nosed Gelflings and vulturish Skeksis-as well as the whole hodge-podge of occult symbols and carefully antiquated tools-come across as strangely arbitrary, constantly reaching for a profundity that never appears. But for the many fans of the movie and young children interested in fantasy-adventure, the book will satisfy greatly. Also included in the package is a preliminary 20-page sketchbook for the production, unseen until now. (May) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved
