The West of Scotland can rightly claim * the title 'Workshop of the British Empire'. Before the First World War the industrial output of the area dominated the imperial markets for ships, sugar machinery, locomotives, bridges, architectural ironwork, and many other engineering products. Sadly, from this preeminence there has been a steady decline over the past sixty years, and most of the great firms that were household names have gone out of business. Surprisingly, although the subject is central to any serious consideration of Britain's economic ascendency in the late nineteenth century, little has been written about the remarkable growth and development of the' engineering and shipbuilding industries of the West of Scotland. The authors of this book have corrected this omission and at the same time tried to explain the erosion of the region's industrial strength in this century. Their analysis is based on the study of the considerable collections of business records, which have been discovered recently in the region, and on extensive fieldwork. As a result they have been able to adopt a novel approach, demonstrating the significance of technical change in determining the structure of business in the area. By the use of two case studies the authors have shown how three companies reacted to the booms and slumps that were characteristic of the nineteenth century and to changed circumstances in recent years. The result is an ambitious, yet successful, survey of the most important sectors of the West of Scotland economy. The authors have evocatively illustrated their argument by the use of superb photographs, some dating from the 186os, of indu.
