Birthing From Within honors nature and helps a woman find her own way to go with nature and her body. This book will help women tap their resources so that their birthing will be life enhancing and empowering.
I am a birth doula, currently expecting my first child. I read this as a doula and an expectant parent, and it is excellent information and preparation for either role. England really emphasizes birth as a rite of passage into parenthood and focuses on women's and their partner's personal, emotional, spiritual experience of the process of pregnancy and birth rather than focusing on preparing parents to be "medical experts" about their birth process.
As a very left-brained person, this book helped me tap into the incredible reserves of creativity available to women during pregnancy, which gave me an overall sense of peace and strength going into birth and parenthood.
I LOVE this book on childbirth - the authors outline some of what they teach in their birthing classes, and give a lot of explanation. I love the preparedness activities such as birth drawings and writing down our expectations and fears, so that we are prepared. They also mention other traditions that aren't "for me" like belly-casting and burying the placenta, but not in too weird a way. I like that the authors do not pretend that labor is easy or painless, but that they give recommendations on how to manage the pain. They talk about truly making the birth your own experience, regardless of whether it's natural or not, unmedicated or not. This book gave me good, positive feelings. There was a wonderful section for fathers/birth companions. I love and copied the reference cards in the appendix and took them to the hospital with us - Pain-Coping Techniques, Questions to Help You Get Information (about whether certain tests/procedures/interventions are necessary, etc.).
