Decorated hardcover. Good. xi, 358 pages. Illustrations. Folding map. Departed in 1872 from the Red River of the North and completed half his journey in early March 1873 by reaching Lake Athabasca. He followed the Peace River to the Rocky Mountains and arrived in north British Columbia in late May. He completed his journey 350 miles farther on 3 June at the frontier station of Quesnelle on the Frazer River.

Octavo, original green bevel edge pictorial cloth stamped in black, gilt and blind, brown endpapers. pp (xii), 358, (2), 8, 48, Oct., 1873, ads + frontispiece portrait with tissue guard and 15 other plates + folding colour map. Slight rubbing to gilt cover and spine illustrations; cracked front inner hinge neatly repaired with brown coloured paper; small very shallow chips to fore edge of front free endpaper and one other leaf; small label with two initials on front pastedown; else a near fine clean, bright and tight copy. Sir William Francis Butler (1838-1910) was a British soldier who participated in Wolseley's Red River expedition of 1870, and who made several overland journeys in the Canadian North West.
