This book is so easy to read and understand. I like Jon's down to earth writing and explanations. It is like actually sitting with him and listening to what he has to say. It has made my understanding of meditation so more clear.
This is a wonderful introduction to meditation. It focuses on breathing, to get in touch with your body, feelings, and thoughts. The method helps you relax. You learn how the mind is like a waterfall of cascading thoughts. It's easy to ignore your body pain and feelings. It allows you to get in touch with feelings one has blocked or is running from. It allows you to grieve and grow. It allows you to feel old pain and painful memories, so that you can let them go. The individual chapters emphasize how important living life is in the present moment. This is it! Nothing comes next; it's a good idea to make this a moment to remember. The author teaches that one must know where he's at before he can know where he's going. Life is a journey. One must learn to go inside to know himself, rather than reaching outside all the time. He teaches you to let go of the past and to stop worrying about the future. He says to let go of old hopes and wishes, old memories and pain. Let go so one can live in the now. He helps one identify attachments, which can cause suffering. The ideas of likes and dislikes, aversions and attractions are discussed. If one practices the methods and ideas suggested, healing occurs, on several levels; not just the physical, but also the psychological, mental, and emotional levels. Meditation is not just clearing the mind so there's nothing there. It's the whole concept of becoming aware: aware of the mind, heart, and body. Knowing what one is experiencing! Knowing where one is - so forward movement can occur. This book, along with one by Jack Kornfield, "A Path With Heart" have drastically changed my life; making me much more aware of what's going on with me. It also has made me a little less frantic, more calm and peaceful, eliminating some of my old needs to be with someone all the time or doing something. Non-doing has been introduced to my intellect through meditation. Taking time to rest without being busy every minute: non-doing: a concept Americans know little about. Learning to recognize unhealthy attachments and let them go is encouraged throughout the book. I am slowly becoming able to accept things as they are, not always as I want them to be. I'm eliminating some of the suffering I endured growing up and suffer now when things don't go my way; learning to love someone without being hopelessly attached. It's a great book!
