A look back in time

by SuzanB on Apr 27, 2008

This translation is a compilation of the first two books in Kurt Hamsun's Wanderer Trilogy. The main character wanders through turn of the century Norway and relates his experiences and observations in the first person. His descriptions of walking through the woods, wildlife, and changes of season are wonderful and make the reader feel they are there with him. To support himself, he works for a few months here and there and tells the stories of his employers and the friends he makes. His observations on human character are done very well. He falls in love with the wife of an employer - this theme runs through both books. For anyone who wants to learn about life in Norway a hundred years ago, I recommend this book. You will think about it long after the last page is read.
