Excerpt: ...In Arizona alone there are some two hundred different plants which are recognized as having been introduced by man--in most cases unintentionally. Some of them arrived as the now dominant population did--westward across the continent from the eastern seaboard. But quite a few others came overland from the Pacific Coast or up from Mexico. And a number of those which moved in from the West are, like the Indian, Asiatic, not European, immigrants. Meanwhile, perhaps an equal number of plants have been deliberately introduced or gone as stowaways from the New World to the Old. Everybody knows about tobacco, potatoes and Indian corn, but that is merely because they happen to be of great economic importance. Many European weeds came from the Americas and so, of course, do many now familiar European garden flowers, a surprising number of which are horticulturists' developments from California species. Moreover, there are a few spectacular cases which it would astonish most Europeans to hear about. Most of the stately palm trees which grow along the Riviera (and for that matter in Hawaii) grow as natives only in California and a few places in Arizona. Or consider the so-called mimosa which seems so characteristic of southern France in the region around Grasse where it makes a very important contribution to the perfume industry. What could be more "typically French?" Actually it is a native of Mexico, Texas and Arizona, not of Europe at all. Sometime early in the seventeenth century it was imported into the famous gardens of the Cardinal Odorardo Farnese, a relative by marriage to the Borgias and the Medicis.
