This Narayan novel is one of his best: funny, ironic, with underlying serious themes. The main character is full of pomposity and hyposcrisy, but immensely likeable. Being forced to confront the modern world, he acquires a greater understanding of himself and the religion he professes. What a shame this novel seems to be out of print!
