Expertly translated, the poem is divided into four parts -- Europe at the turn of the century, the condition of Polish culture between the two world wars, the harsh reality of World War II, and the role of the poet in the postwar world. Here Milosz addresses the failure of early-20th-century Polish poetry. With vast historical sweep and in language that enables readers to see "as if in a flash of summer lighting", Milosz offers a fascinating account of the mysterious art of poetry.Hide synopsis

For a given servant of the Muses was in that period not only busy creating ideal objects that bear the name of poems. He (sic) lived among people, was feeling, thinking, getting acquainted w/others' thoughts...In everything he (sic) wrote then the same striving + the same tone could be discerned, as we move in our life through successive renewals + incarnations, each of which has its own tone. Why then separate what is unified in time, in my case by the years 1981-1984? Why not include in 1 book, along w/my own poems, poems by others, notes in prose, quotations from various sources + even fragments of letters from friends if all these pieces serve 1 purpose: my attempt to approach the inexpressible sense of being? Such a design I adopted in this book, searching, as I have once said, for 'a more spacious form'"--author in preface; book is very good except for noted brief inscriptions (outside text) + blind-stamp, thus good plus to very good collectible copy of 27-year-old out-of-print unusual, original poetry/prose paperback by THE Polish maestro.
