20,000 Sea Creatures
A ripping good yarn. Translating from scratch (from the original French) was a great idea. Having two guys realize they were both working on the same project and colaberating instead of competing was another great idea.
Verne's invention of science fiction was heavy on the science. He gives a verbal warning that a highly scientific section is coming. Lists of various flora and fauna (genus, philum, family and common name) which can be skipped if you aren't a marine biologist or botanist moves things right along.
It isn't the Disney version, hasn't been retranslated from poor translations. It was crisp, clean and captivating. Verne was way ahead of his time but very much a man of his time.
If you missed it as a kid give it a read now. I think it may surprise you.
