Lawyer Atticus Finch gives this advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic novel - a black man charged with the rape of a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with exuberant humour the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s. The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy is pricked by the stamina of one man's struggle for justice. But the weight of history will only tolerate so much...A benchmark of classic American literature, To Kill A Mockingbird approaches the highly sensitive topic of racism in 1930s America with humour, warmth and compassion, making it widely recognised as one of the best books of the twentieth century and in American literature.Hide synopsis

Even though it is a high school English requirement, it is an accurate account of how people were treated at that time in history. The movie is pretty close to the book so if you have a chance watch the movie too. It brings it to life more than the book.

An excellent work of literature! As an 8th grade teacher I share this novel with my students each year and this audio book is the best version I have ever found. Sally Darling's narration is top-notch with spot-on inflections and cadence that allow the listener to transport themselves to Scout's world ...

One of my wife's favorites--both the book and the movie--and to have the book with the signature of the actress who played Scout in the movie really made it special.

If The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, 1984, and The Great Gatsby were all tossed into a literary cage-fighting match together, which book would emerge as the victor? To make this interesting, let's include The Hunger Games, which isn't a literarly classic like the others but IS about ...
