He ran risks, too, from stray coastguard bullets and sudden double-crosses. But it was the only way he could keep his boat, keep his independence, and keep his belly full...This classic novella was turned into a brilliant film by Howard Hawks - the film in which Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Becall met - and remains an important work by one of the greatest American novelists of the twentieth century.Hide synopsis

The gilt on the facsimile signature on the front panel is barely readable. The gold and green stamped on the spine has held up well. Endpapers show some typical yellowing with the previous owner's neat name on the ffep. Overall a very acceptable copy of the true first edition (with the "A" on the copyright page) of this Hemingway novel. Included in the price of the book is a facsimile dust jacket that fits the book perfectly.

Gilt lettering against green background. Black boards are faintly soiled. Jacket is edgeworn and chipped at spine-ends but solid. Four strips of masking tape--at spine-ends and top and bottom edge of front flap--were used to reinforce the inside of the jacket. Signed by former owner on front endpaper.

The black cloth is slightly dulled at the edge of the rear cover, but the green and gilt on the spine is still fairly bright. Endpapers are a little glue darkened, and there is a tiny bookseller's label at the bottom of the rear pastedown. The jacket has a 1/4" chip at the top of the spine, and a tiny chip at the bottom of the spine. There is slight loss of color along the fold between spine and front panel, from rubbing. This is a tight, solid copy of this Hemingway classic.
