I thoroughly enjoyed this little book about growing up in New York in the early part of the 19th century. Mr. Armstrong vividly portrays his creative family, from his artistic father who designed stained glass windows to his talented sister who followed in her father's footsteps. While Mr. Armstrong does not elaborate on his family history, the nuance of his experiences leads you to believe that his family was more "upper" than "middle" class. This is evidenced by his attendance at a private school "uptown" and his mandatory training in military drills. It is obvious that his family was loving and close as he describes their trips to the family home on the Hudson and, in later years, to their Canadian summer home. Even if you are not on a historical mission, you will enjoy this family account.
