In editing them for press I have resisted all temptation to make them into something different. They remain lectures; they are specifically not intended to provide a textbook of regional planning, of which there are now excellent examples available.1 The title, Theory and Practice of Regional Planning, accurately outlines their scope. Four of the lectures deal with the essential theory and the working tools of regional planning, of which I think there is still too little knowledge among most English audiences. In particular, they try to relate regional planning to other species of that very large genus, planning. The two last lectures deal with actual experience, but in terms of the scheme of classification that has been developed in the earlier. I should like to record my thanks to the Rationalist Press Association who, by endowing the Charles Beard Lectures, made this book possible. I want to express my particular thanks to H. D. ('Billy') Hughes, Warden of Ruskin College, for his kindness in first inviting me to give these lectures, and then for acting as so admirable a chairman throughout. I hope he will find this published volume some recompense. PETER HALL October 1969.
