Beautiful Classic

by Buffalo on Jul 10, 2008

Teacher turned out to be as good in 2008 as when I read it in the sixties. Now that I have granddaughters learning to read, I wondered if I could still get this excellent, heart warming guide. Found it on Alibris and read it in a couple of days--stunned at Sylvia Ashton-Warner's brilliance as she explained her organic approach to teaching reading. In this book, her students were Maori's from New Zealand, struggling to enter the dominant culture, but her technique applies to any child first meeting words. That this method was known in the late 40's, when Ashton-Warner did the teaching that led to her story, and that we still cannot get children excited about reading, is a crime. I have passed it on to my daughter-in-law who is home-schooling her girls. The six year old, reluctant at first, is catching on--she played Scrabble with her dad this week. Take heart! Read this book.
