I saw the movie musical Cabaret 38 years ago not knowing it was based on a book written by Christopher Isherwood. This past October, I saw Cabaret as a live theater musical and discovered the name of the book and author. I read the book to satisfy my own curiosity. I was particularly interested in the historical time frame in regards to what was happening in Germany from 1930 to 1933, the time that Isherwood was living in Berlin. Very interesting. I'm glad I took the time to read both stories.
Classic stories of Isherwood's time in Berlin during the early 1930's. The book is credited as the basis for the Broadway show "Cabaret". As someone who performs cabaret music from the Weimar Germany era - the insights in these stories, culled from Isherwood's diaries of that period, are invaluable.
