Sportsman's Notebook

by Model12 on Jul 30, 2010

This collection of short stories established Turgenev on both the Russian and World stage as a brilliant writer. I was so impressed that I made a visit to Spasskoye this May to see through my own eyes the scenery he was writing about, it was well worth the effort. Turgenev was a most humane man, seeing how his mother treated serfs made him protest against this Russian form of slavery by writing about the lives of the folk he met on his walks about the Orel region with his gun, they became human and not just something of value to be used to work and possibly sold or mortgaged! His obituary of Gogol had him imprisoned on his estate and continued to have him leave Russia for long periods. If you had never read Turgenev like myself just delve into this and you will be addicted, he is now my number one writer and led me on to other greats of Russian literature, they are really that good I cannot believed I existed without them.
