Tiny explosions...

I was a little put-off by this book. Not sure I felt enough reasonable ground had been laid. Anyway, you do get the return of the lead villain, who now gets semi-tangled with the current state of the war-transformed hero. Alexander has to push the villain to a new place to keep him one step ahead of the hero character, and in my opinion, this seems a little forced. Nevertheless, book 3 does close the story out fairly beyond this with the "pieces missing" feeling of the close of a war. You'll see it written that this is his most "adult" series and I would have to agree. He makes little attempt to spare your feelings for characters, such as a story of war should. It's not all dour but it did leave me feeling a bit down, which unfairly contributes to my swiping of this 3rd book one of it's ratings stars. Despite this, other criticisms back this up: The conclusion feels a little rushed and unconsidered even in it's fairness. The aforementioned recasting of the lead villain, which could perhaps be passed off as that character's fallout from the war experience, but still seems desperate for the writer as opposed to that of the character. The choppy manner in which the proper failure of the lead character's control over the situation establishes itself. With a little more work this could have been a definite 4 star review. Not a bad read at all, but the least handled and least engaging book of the series. ***
