Gem of a book!

by luvbnamdwfe on Dec 15, 2007

This book should be required reading for all apprentices and their teachers!! What an invaluable collection of pertinant and helpful information! Stieger maps out a course for an apprentice and her teacher to follow through the myriad of ways to become a midwife. It is flexible enough for any apprenticeship, no matter the individual style, but gives enough structure to what can be a frustratingly nebulous process. Steiger outlines three seperate "phases" for the apprentice to move through, with frequent opportunities to evaluate her progress. Each phase has its own texts, projects and skills to complete and/or master. This information alone would make the book a winner, but she also includes chapters on the politics of midwifery, communication, assisting and many more helpful topics for the apprentice. The only drawback to this book is that there is no updated edition. However, this does not prevent the book from still giving timeless and valuable information. A must read for the beginning apprentice as well as the one who is considering becoming a midwife.
