When his father becomes caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, Danny's visions grow out of control. As winter closes in and blizzards cut them off, the hotel seems to develop a life of its own. It is meant to be empty. So who is the lady in Room 217 and who are the masked guests going up and down in the elevator? And why do the hedges shaped like animals seem so alive? Somewhere, somehow, there is an evil force in the hotel - and that, too, is beginning to shine ...Hide synopsis

The Shining stands as a cultural icon of modern horror, a searing study of a family torn apart, and a nightmarish glimpse into the dark recesses of human weakness and dementia. The Overlook Hotel claimed the most beautiful setting of any resort in the world, but the Torrance family saw much more than its splendor. Danny, blessed-or cursed-with a shining, precognitive gift saw visions hideously beyond the comprehension of a small boy. For Jack, Wendy, and their young son it is a place where past horrors come to life. And where those gifted with the shining do battle with the darkest evils. This tale of a troubled man hired to care for a remote mountain resort over the winter, slowly but steadily unfolds as secrets from the hotel's past are revealed, and the hotel itself attempts to claim the very souls of the Torrance family. "YOU'RE THE CARETAKER, SIR. YOU'VE ALWAYS BEEN THE CARETAKER. I SHOULD KNOW, SIR. I'VE ALWAYS BEEN HERE..." Rare investment. 447 pages. 5 3/4" x 8 1/2" design. Printed in Edinburgh by Thomson Litho Ltd. Insured post.
Wow!! Where do I even begin? This book is definitely high on Stephen king's top 10 list of his best books. I lost a lot, and I mean A LOT of sleep. One particular scene made me throw the book across the room and hide under the covers. The isolated hotel makes everything so much scarier! The way it snows so much there's practically no escape from the crazed father. The way Wendy and Danny try to escape is very suspenseful. When you get to that part, you won't be able to put the book down. I won't tell you whether they escape or not! You have to find that out for yourself. And the quality this book was in when I bought it was surprising. When I ordered it,the condition was good. I don't normally buy books where the condition says good, but I made an exception because it was a hardcover. When the book quickly came,I was surprised because the book looked between very good and like new!! And it only cost $0.99!! I got an amazing deal. I love alibris! And I'm sure you will too!!
This book is full of suspense. I went straight to my library to fing a copy of the book after seeing the movie. I was surprised at how different the book is. The isolation of the hotel works better in the book. The reader feels trapped with the reader and can sense the approaching doom. The family is entertaining to read, which is a good thing considering the cast is limited. The small cast helps the isolation affect.
The is a super scary book great to read at night or around Halloween.
